We began with a simple question: what would it take to make a real, measurable difference here? Here is how we got started, and how far we have come.

How we started

A small group of neighbors set out to tackle one problem together. Their first project brought in more volunteers than they expected, and the work has grown every year since.

  • Start small. Every program began as a pilot with a handful of people.
  • Measure what matters. We track a few clear numbers and share them every year.
  • Grow what works. When a pilot succeeds, we find the partners to take it further.

Our first project restored a stretch of the river path that thousands of people now use.

What we learned along the way

Not every idea worked. We say so in our annual report, and we change course quickly when the numbers tell us to.

  1. Listen first, then plan
  2. Work with partners who already know the neighborhood
  3. Report back to everyone who helped

The best decision we made was to publish our numbers from day one. It keeps us honest, and it brings in people who care about results.
